About the project

Background

Take Away is a self-initiated photographic series exploring the breadth of takeaway food available across Waltham Forest. Made in collaboration with shop workers, the portraits focus on food as a marker of migration, enterprise and everyday local identity. The work was presented as part of a wider Image17 collaborative project responding to Grayson Perry’s Walthamstow Tapestry, created for the annual E17 Art Trail.

Outcomes

  • Self-initiated portrait series produced in collaboration with takeaway owners and staff across Waltham Forest
  • Contribution to the Image17 group project documenting local life in the borough
  • Included within a single 15-metre-long installation shown during the E17 Art Trail (2010)
  • Display format challenged individual authorship through an interwoven, collective installation and shared responsibility for public presentation
