Sound Waves: Music in Newham

Co-led and curated for Rendezvous Projects

A National Lottery Heritage Fund–supported exhibition exploring six decades of Newham’s grassroots music culture through thematic strands connecting genres, communities and lived experience.

For the exhibition, six cross-cutting themes were developed to structure the display, grouping music histories through “common threads” rather than isolated genres. Oral history extracts were embedded throughout, positioned alongside archival photography, venue histories and community-contributed material.

The exhibition prioritised lived experience and local voice, foregrounding the diversity of communities, venues and musical forms across six decades.

Outcomes

  • Strong audience response to oral histories and archival material
  • Demonstrated demand for borough-level cultural history
  • Expanded documentation of underrepresented music communities
