About the project

Background

Commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in partnership with Nottingham Contemporary, this project worked with GCSE students from the Farnborough Academy to explore identity, pride and place through photography. Students researched historical figures from the National Portrait Gallery collection and responded by documenting people and groups within their own community.

Outcomes

The project produced a collaborative photographic series alongside new documentary portraits. The work was exhibited at Nottingham Contemporary (2017) and later at the National Portrait Gallery (2017–18), presenting new perspectives on the Clifton Estate and strengthening pride in local identity.
